Danny MacAskill: From island lad to cycle superstar

Danny MacAskill got his first bike when he was 11 and has hardly looked back since. Over the years he built up his skillset, pulling skids and wheelies on his native Isle of Skye, Scotland.

After many years of practice and enjoyment, in 2009 he uploaded a five-and-a-half-minute video of him performing street trials to YouTube. The video, filmed by his flatmate, was done over a six-month period and showcased some of his stunt talents.

He did not expect the video to get the attention it did as overnight he racked up thousands of views. From this exposure Danny was contacted by people from all over the world wanting to interview him and find out a bit more about someone, who until now, was just a guy with amazing bike skills.

Since the success of his first video, Danny gave up his career as a mechanic and now rides fulltime. He works as a pro rider for Inspired Bicycles and has a major sponsorship deal with Red Bull, regularly releasing new videos are viewed by millions.

A lot has happened since 2009 and Danny;s career has gone from strength to strength.

He was featured in the New York Times and has been a Hollywood stuntman along with appearing in a commercial for the Volkswagen Golf estate.

He was also nominated for action sportsman of the year in 2015 after he released his video ‘The Ridge’ showcasing his talents in the mountainous surroundings of his home on the Isle of Skye.

He also designs his own bikes for Inspired Bicycles, one of which he currently rides.

The team regularly upload videos on their webpage showcasing new and exciting stunts.

More recently, Danny worked with VisitScotland and Scotland’s First Minister Nicola Sturgeon to launch the £4m #ScotSpirit campaign.

This campaign aims to not only showcase the beauty that Scotland has to offer but give people a chance to see true Scottish spirit.

Danny said in a recent interview: “The best part about being a professional biker is having the hardest decision I have to make on a daily basis be what cake I’m going to have for lunch.” Where do we sign up?!

With this kind of profession there is obviously a high risk of injury and Danny has had his fair share over the years. From broken feet to dislocated fingers he has spent quite a bit of time in the emergency room.

However, he always comes back fighting and gets back on his bike as soon as possible. A valuable lesson for all.

Danny MacAskill proves that with determination and hard work, we can do anything.
